Astronaut Scott Kelly comes back to earth after a year in space mission. NASA is commending a major homecoming as American Astronaut, Scott Kelly, comes back to Earth after having spent almost an entire year on the International Space Station drifting 250 miles over the earth — setting a record for an American Astronaut to spend 340 consecutive days in space. At the end of 340 days he has seen 5,400 earth orbits and about 11,000 sunsets. He landed back to earth on Tuesday evening, arriving in Kazakhstan at around 11:30 p.m. ET.

Some Records in Scott Kelly’s kitty
- Kelly has spent more consecutive days in space —340 — than any American. However, the international record was set by cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov, who spent 437 days on the Mir space station.
- Kelly will also set the record for the American having spent the highest number of days in space, at 540. The world record is held by a Russian, Gennady Padalka, at 879 days.
Purpose of this Science Mission
The purpose of this science mission by NASA was to conduct a science experiment to study the effects on human body while living in space in order to prepare astronauts for longer flights to Mars or other planets.
The effects of space can be extremely harsh on the body. Muscles and bone weaken when there is no gravity. Astronauts become prone to insomnia and lower eyesight. NASA doctors are interested in experimenting how these changes can impact an astronaut over the period of a year, rather than the normal six-month mission. They wish to make long spaceflight gentler on the human body.
Kelly’s twin brother, Mark, is going to serve as a major comparison for the experiment. Amid the mission, both Scott and Mark routinely took their blood, salivation, stool, and urine samples for testing. Scientists will search for indications, from the samples collected, of irritation, DNA damage, and changes in the micro biome (the gut bacteria that help in digestion).
What Kelly has to say about his experience in space?
When asked by a reporter what Kelly will be most proud of in 20 years, he replied, “The hard work .The thing I like most about flying in space is not the view, or floating, or the other stuff that’s fun about this — riding the rocket and coming back to Earth,” he said, then continued:
The thing I like about it is doing something I feel very strongly about, very passionately about. … The work we do here every day is extremely hard. It takes a lot of concentration. It’s complicated. We work hard at it. I work hard at it. Twenty years from now, I’ll look back, and I’ll be proud I had basically a 20 or more year career with four very successful spaceflights that accomplished most of our mission objectives. And it wasn’t easy. … It’s really the whole thing that I enjoy.
